Tottenham stunned by oldest Europa league side.

Published

Lior Refaelov on he half-hour mark was the only difference as Belgian side Royal Antwerp stunned Tottenham 1-0 in a tough Europa League clash played on Thursday, October 29.

Spurs came into the match off a spectacular form, having won three of their last four matches in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho rang a couple of changes from the side that secured a slim 1-0 win over struggling Burnley on Monday, October 26, with both Gareth Bale and outcast Dele Alli making the starting line up against the Belgian giants. However, not even the Welshman could save Spurs from defeat as a stubborn Antwerp side clung on their lead to claim maximum points. Giovani Lo Celso had the best chance to hand the visitors the lead as he forced a decent save from the goalkeeper Jean Butez earlier on. Antwerp went on to take the lead through Refaelov who fired home the opener after Ben Davies lost the ball to allow the hosts break. Spurs nearly fell 2-0 down inside the first minute of the restart but Davinon Sanchez did well to recover and deny Refaelov a second shot on goal. Aware of their opponents’ threat, Mourinho introduced Kane in place of Bale, but not even the Englishman could help his side from a crashing.

The result saw the English side drop to second of Group J with three points as Antwerp moved top with six points.

This will be the first time this year that the United Kingdom government will be allowing fans into the stadium since March due to the serious disturbance of deadly COVID-19. Anthony Joshua will be putting his heavyweight titles on the line against Kubrat Pulev in a duel that will come up on December 12.

According to the report on Daily Mail, PDC chairman Barry Hearn explained that he is waiting for more information from the UK government. ‘We are geared up for fans to come back. If they give me 1,000 I will be over the moon but we waiting on more information from the government and health authorities. ‘We have got the AJ fight coming up as well without a ticketing agency, but believe you me we are standing by and waiting to press a big red button on my desk.” Anthony Joshua’s last professional fight was against Andy Ruiz and the 31-year-old did well to beat the Mexican and collected his titles back
