United edge past PSG as Rashford scores once again

Published

  1. uThe night was painted red in Paris as Manchester United claimed a stunning victory over the finalists of last season’s League and Ligue 1 Champions, Paris St. Germain.

The match kicked off with United taking all the possesion and dominating the game with the very unorthodox tactic by Solksjear; bringing in 5 defenders and leaving only 3 midfielders to work around the ball.

Having taken the captain’s armband, Bruno Fernandes took the responsibility. Despite missing a penalty against Newcastle United at the weekend, the midfielder elected to take another and despite his first effort being saved by Keylor Navas he, again, decided to spot the ball down and this time calmly beat the PSG goalkeeper. Navas had turned away the first kick but rightly and despite PSG’s protestations was penalised for being off his goal-line when it was taken. For the second effort Fernandes held his nerve and rolled the ball in the same direction with Navas this time diving to his right at the 24th minute.

PSG will have felt aggrieved and also argued the penalty should not have been given even though it appeared Abdou Diallo had clearly caught Anthony Martial after the striker turned him sharply when Fernandes rolled a pass into his feet. Instead they were undone for their complacency even if David De Gea had already made a couple of sharp saves – firstly from Angel Di Maria and then, more impressively, when Layvin Kurzawa met Kylian Mbappe’s inswinging cross. Kurzawa was just a couple of yards out but De Gea reacted superbly to block and smother the rebound.

With the first half ending in United’s favour, the home side quickly started to mount pressure on the visiting side when the second 45 kicked off.

Superstar Neymar made some impressive moves against the Reds, but United’s defence were up to the task.

Their one goal lead was soon eliminated by a devastating own goap coming from Martial’s header into the net from Neymar’s inswinging corner kick.

Having gotten an equalizer, the French side eagerly attacked to get another but were frustrated at all ends to get a winning goal. United also had a couple of chances to put the ball in the back of the net, but were to careless in front of goal.

However, as the match died down and everyone thougt it was over, United bolted with an attack doen the left and as the ball got to the youngster Rashford outside of PSG’s area, he calmly turned and struck a low ball into the net; giving United the winning goal of the match.

This became the very first time since 2002 that PSG were beaten in a group stage game in the Champions League at home.

This result earned United their first three points in their European campaign, getting behind RB Leipzig who won Istanbul Besekanah by 2 goals to nil to top Group E.

Barcelona did not have much problem to do when they dispatched Dynamo Kiev by 2-0 in the Champions League Group G cracker.

Sergino Dest, Martin Braithwaite’s brace and Antoine Griezmann’s goal ensured Barca continued their perfect run in the competition. Lionel Mess and Frenkie de Jong were rested for the fixture as six new players were brought into the starting XI against the Ukrainian side. Ronald Koeman’s men had a shaky start into the match as Dynamocreated a couple of decent chances but were wasteful in front of goal. But right at the start of the second period, La Blaugrana started the game on a bright note as Dest made it 1-0 courtesy of an assist from Braithwaite in the 52nd minute.

The lead was doubled five minutes later as Oscar Mingueza flicked on a header from corner kick for Braitwaith to steer in at the near post. 2-0 it was to Barca. Braithwaite won a penalty in the 69th minute and converted the resulting spot-kick to complete his brace and make it 3-0.

Substitute Griezmann sealed it for Barcelona in the second minute of the 90 as the Frenchman’s shot found the roof of the net from a Jordi Alba’s assist.
